Not (Just) Your Mom’s Moccasins

February 25th, 2010 2 comments

Time was, slippers were just slippers: leather, cozy shearling lining, and some tassels if you were lucky. These days slippers are more complex affairs, but fear not, Buzzillions is here to decode all the new slipper lingo. Our Slipper Product Reviews page has the full run-down on how to buy slippers, but for now, a glossary:

Memory foam slippers (n.) – You thought memory foam was for astronauts and insomniacs? Wrong. It’s also for your piggy toes. Some product reviews note that it’s hard to get the correct fit for some models. The Dearfoams Memory Foam Clog, though, gets great review all-around for striking the right balance of comfort and support.

LED slippers that light up when you walk!

Hybrid slippers (n.) – Not to be confused with Eco slippers, hybrid slippers are a combination of slipper and flip flop. Featuring a cozy footbed lining (often shearling), the have a minimalist upper reminiscent of a flip flop. Product reviews say they’re extremely comfortable. The Acorn Quilted Eco Band model gets high marks for support and breathability.

Slipper socks (n.) – Not quite a slipper, more than a sock, slipper socks are another type of footwear with an identity crisis. Typically made of women materials, and covering the ankle or shin, they also have gripping soles for extra insulation & traction. According to the product reviews, these are a great alternative to traditional slippers as they provide a more snug fit and better breathability.

Eco slippers (n.) – Made of vegan, biodegradable, or recycled materials, eco-slippers are the next big thing [insert carbon "footprint" pun here]. They come in almost any style you can think of but are made of earth friendly materials.

Spa slippers (n.) – They won’t give you a massage, but spa slippers give you a little bit of zen on your feet. Designed to be soothing and soft, product reviews on different spa slippers say that they are comfy and plush. Spa slippers come in flip flop, slide on, and bootie form, and are usually chenille or terry cloth.

Now that you’re more enlightened about the options, you might be wondering, “Do they make ‘em like they used to?”. Our trusty slipper reviewers tell us that, to some extent, “they” do make ‘em like they used to: durable & comfy with lots of suede. Ugg, Minnetonka, and many others make top rated moccasins just the way you remember them.

Draft Snowboard
The Draft is an advanced true-twin for park-bred jibbers who aren’t afraid to use the whole mountain. Rock the nose, spin with ease, land smoothly, and lock hook-free onto rails—with improved landing gear, ollie power, and transitional edge control. The koa wood inlay provides a soft buttery f…

I’ve found the fun again!!

5 stars
5out of 5

Pros: Fast, Well Balanced, Lots Of Pop, Good Flexibility, Lightweight, Carving Ability, Smooth Stability

Cons: Hard to move in crud

Best Uses: Park, Jibbing, Freeriding, Tricks

Reviewer Comments: I’ve been riding the Arbor Element 162 for several years, I’ve also ridden the Mystic. I ordered the Draft 153 and found several incredibly fun pros about this board.
# 1 – The grip tech is priceless, super confident carves and no chatter at top speeds.
# 2 – The rocker technology allows for super fun jibbing and forgiving butters, as well as a very stable ride at all speeds.
# 3 – This board begs to spin, with the “softer” edging and rocker style ends you can’t help but throw an extra 180 into your “regular” 360 kicker, etc. It just begs for it. And delivers really well.
Overall this board is a mountain charger, I only found less reliability in powder, and steeper tree runs. (just switched out to the Element for a few hours.) This board is really, really great for the guy who has been boarding a long time and is looking for something to bring a little freshness back to riding. Arbor has continued to push the envelope and keep customers!!!

RUBBISH

1 stars
1out of 5

Pros: It locks

Cons: Musty, Lock jams, Poor Quality, Wiring problem

Primary use: Personal

Reviewer Comments: I purchased this safe to store important documents in my home. After 1 year, every item in the safe became damp and musty smelling. I kept a box of baking soda inside and changed it regularly.

After 3 years, I could not open the safe because the locking mechanism was jammed. Sentry advised that I hit the door with a rubber mallet repeatedly. If that didn’t work, I would need to call a locksmith. After hitting the handle with a mallet I got it open. 3 months later, the safe no longer accepted the electronic combination. Sentry said it was a wiring problem and that I would need to call a locksmith to open it. Every locksmith I called said that the safe had to be drilled out and it would no longer be operable. I cost me $125 to open the safe and $10 to dispose of it.

I bought this safe thinking it would be a lifetime investment. What a mistake! I will never buy a Sentry safe again, nor will I buy any safe with an electronic keypad.

RAM, or fountain of youth?

5 stars
5out of 5

Pros: Increases Speed, Easy To Install, Reliable Performance

Best Uses: Increased Performance

Primary use: Personal

Reviewer Comments: The package arrived white as fresh Colorado snow, spotless, ephemeral in its cleanliness and rectangularity, heralding the arrival of its precious silicon contents and like a spring breeze giving a faint but unmistakable clue of what the future held. Shiny and translucent, the anti-static plastic cradling the circuitry within slid from the bubble-wrap womb that had so dutifully protected it. Trembling with anticipation and fear of static shock damage, I unsheathed the RAM stick. Firmly yet gently I placed the RAM into the slot and pushed, lips pursed and sweat beading on my forehead as trepidation built commensurate with every additional pound of pressure – the board, the Mother board, would it not sustain such pressure? Would it snap, converting this now-ineffable RAM stick into so much dull, useless plastic and cold solder? But then: ‘click.’ No, I will not die, not today, the Mother board replied to my pressure. The Hard Drive platters rang in anticipation of the joy of no longer being thrashed for even the most pedestrian of tasks. No, I will not die, not today; for today I have been given new life. Thus sprung forth from my Dell Dimension 4400 its song of renewal, trumpeting its return from obsolescence, ever stalwart.

Light & Comfortable

5 stars
5out of 5

Sizing: Feels true to size

Width: Feels true to width

Pros: Stylish, Durable, Stable, Comfortable

Best Uses: Wet Weather, Casual Wear

Reviewer Comments: I bought these boots for my husband. He loves boots, but he usually wears hard, heavy boots and they hurt his back. He has worn these a few times now and absolutely loves them. He says, “I hardly noticed I have boots on.” He also thinks these were made by aliens because the boots never get dirty. He’s worn them in the rain & dirt and they still look brand new. So, they are definately comfortable, light and resilient.
